AB Swimmers Compete At Regionals, Qualify For State

The Arkansas Baptist High School Swim Team competed in the South District Regional Swim Meet on Friday, Feburary 10, at Ouachita Baptist University. The girls 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay team of Andi Burroughs, Hayley Lockard, Abby Thomas and Lizzie Hall placed 2nd in both events and earned all-region honors. The boys 200 medley relay team of Zac Craig, Bradley Clay, Jacob Chapman and Steven Singleton finished in 1st place with a time of 1.55.71. The boys 200 freestyle relay team of Cameron Schmeckenbecher, Steven Singleton, Bradley Clay and Jacob Chapman placed 1st, also earning all-region honors.

Andi Burroughs placed 1st in the girls 200 IM and the girls 100 fly events and acheived all-region honors. Bradley Clay won the boys 200 IM and the boys 100 breaststroke, earning all-region honors. Jacob Chapman won the boys 50 freestyle and the boys 100 fly and achieved all-region honors. Abby Thomas placed 2nd in the girls 100 breaststroke and achieved all-region honors. Hayley Lockard placed 2nd in the girls 500 freestyle and achieved all-region honors. Zac Craig won the boys 1 meter diving competition and acheived all-region honors. Also participating in individual events and scoring points for the team were the following: Bethany Long, Will McCarley and Mary Helen Brighton. The girls team placed 3rd in the meet; the boys team placed 3rd; and the team placed 3rd in overall points scoring.

Swimmers qualifying for the state meet in individual events were: Andi Burroughs in 5 events, Jacob Chapman in 5 events, Bradley Clay in 4 events and Abby Thomas in 1 event. Eligible to swim 1 event is Hayley Lockard. Qualified in relays are Andi Burroughs, Abby Thomas, Hayley Lockard, Lizzie Hall, Steven Singleton, Zac Craig, Bradley Clay, Jacob Chapman and Cameron Schmeckenbecher. Zac Craig will also represent the Arkansas Baptist Eagles in the boys 1 meter diving competition. The state meet is February 24-25 at UALR.

Jr High Quiz Bowl Team Places Second In Region

The Junior High Quiz Bowl Team placed second in 3-A Junior High Regional Quiz Bowl Tournament on Saturday, February 4th, at Cutter-Morning Star. Arkansas Baptist was well represented and did an outstanding job finishing ahead of Barton, Jessieville and Glen Rose. Those participating in the tournament included: Jeffrey Tonti – Captain, Andrew Crook, Megan Garrett, Loren Samons, Matthew Caid, John Patrick Murtha, Caleb Byrd, Taylor Johns and Garrett Triche. The team’s success makes them eligible to travel to the state tournament on February 25th.

ABES Announces Spring Box Tops Contest

ABES will hold its semi-annual Box Tops for Education collection contest from February 14-24. The school is halfway to its goal of earning $4,000 by collecting Box Tops. Bonus Box Tops can also be earned using your Kroger Plus card. Students will be rewarded for submitting Box Tops. Click here to download a collection sheet.

Prizes for this contest include the following:

1. Each student turning in 2 complete “25 count” collection sheets (TOTAL of 50 Box Tops) *expired BT, Campbells labels, etc. do not count

PRIZE: Out of Dress Code Day

2. Each student turning in 3 complete “25 count” collection sheets (TOTAL of 75 Box Tops) *expired BT, Campbells labels, etc. do not count

PRIZE: Sweet Treat Day (+ Out of Dress Code Day for first two sheets)

3. Class turning in the most Box Tops overall

PRIZE: Box Tops Spirit Wand (filled with goodies) & Special Prize for Teacher

4. Student turning in the most Box Tops overall

PRIZE: Mini Box Tops Spirit Wand (filled with goodies)

5. One student from each grade level (K3 – 6) turning in the most Box Tops will have their name in a drawing to choose a prize from the Box Tops Treasure Box. Five names will be drawn.

When submitting Box Tops, please remember the following:

Collection sheets should only consist of the little 10 cent Box Tops. All Bonus Box Tops worth more than 10 cents, should be placed in a separate envelope or baggie. Bonus BT’s DO count for your child, we just have to submit them separately than the 10 cent collection sheets.
NO STAPLES – Please do not staple Box Tops to collection sheets. Use tape or glue only.
Be sure to list your Child’s name and their Teacher on each sheet, envelope, or baggie.
An AB collection sheet is attached. Additional collection sheets are available for printout by clicking here. Hard copies are also available in the Elementary Office.

Arnold Family Donates Lithograph Collection to Arkansas Baptist

Curtis Arnold, executive director of the Arnold Family Foundation, has donated the family’s extensive collection of lithographs to Arkansas Baptist. The collection is made up of numerous signed and numbered lithographs ranging from photographs from Cuba to paintings of wildlife and marine life.

Arnold, an Arkansas Baptist board member, donated the collection to benefit the school’s visual arts program. “Anyone who knows me is aware of my passion for all the arts. I’m excited to see growth in our visual arts program and hope the collection will inform and inspire our students,” Arnold said.

The collection is comprised of nearly 1000 limited edition lithographs with an appraised value of over $170,000. “We are enormously grateful for the Arnolds and their continued support of Arkansas Baptist,” David Sanders, Arkansas Baptist director of development, said. “Our students, both present and future, will benefit from this wonderful gift.”

AB Holds Annual 180 Week

ABHS’ annual 180 Week was January 31-February 2. We were blessed to have Jason Curry from The Church at Rock Creek teaching and preaching God’s Word to our high school students. Our worship leader was Dove Award nominee Nathan Gaddis from The Church at Rock Creek. The theme for this year’s 180 Week was “A look in the mirror.” Jason challenged each person to take a real look at themselves in light of the Scriptures. God worked in our midst as several students made decisions to accept or renew their relationship with Jesus Christ. We are very blessed to have a school where God’s Word can be proclaimed openly to our students.

This year to advertise 180 Week, students in the Digital Imaging class were asked to create a poster. Grey Dunnaway’s poster was selected from all the entries as the top design. Other students whose work was also selected included Megan Porto, Thomas Hall, Amanda White, Ben Gipson, Hayley Goodson and Katie Colford. The class is taught by Mrs. Kim Van Namen.

AB Football Players Earn Post Season Honors

The post season honors kept coming for the 11-2 Arkansas Baptist Eagles. The team set school records for most wins with 11 and tied the school record for most play-off wins in a season at 2.

Individual awards were announced this week, and the Eagles placed two on the 3A All State Team and eleven on the All Conference Team. Seniors Ryan Perkins and Drake Newkirk were named to the 2011 3A All State Team. The Eagles also placed Patrick Filat, Jacob Chapman, Hayden Ward, Dakota Newkirk, Luke Byrum, J.D. Campbell, Ian Little, Nathan Rogers, Justin Lamb, Andrew Estes and Jack Hanson on the All Conference Team. To read more about each player please go to ArkansasBaptistFootball.com.

Eagles Split Senior Night

The Arkansas Baptist Varsity Basketball team split Senior Night games at home on Tuesday, February 7, against Cutter-Morning Star.

The Baptist boys had their Senior Night spoiled by Cutter-Morning Star 63 to 49, losing consecutive home games for the first time in very a long time. AB got off to a 6-0 start but Cutter rallied and took a four point lead at the end of the first period. Cutter never trailed again. AB had two three point shots rattle out that could have cut the Cutter lead to 3 with one minute to play. Baptist finished the regular season with a record of 19-7 and a first place 11-3 finish in the 5-3A conference. The boys will play in the semi-finals of the District Tournament next week at Episcopal. Drake Newkirk led the AB Eagles with 16 points. Mitch Thompson added 9, Ben Gipson scored 8, Ryan Perkins and Dakota Newkirk had 6 points each. Brandon Rook and Alex Becker completed the scoring with 2 points each.

The Baptist girls enjoyed a Senior Night win over Cutter-Morning Star 67 to 46. The AB Lady Eagles raced out to a 39 to 21 halftime lead and cruised to victory. The girls ended their regular season with a record of 13-10 and 9-5 in the 5-3A conference. They will play in the District Tournament next week at Episcopal. The Lady Eagles were led by Kayla Byrd with 18 points and Apple Filat with 17 points. Caroline Hogue added 10, Katelyn Caldwell and Hannah Estes each had 8, and Mari Bednar 6.

Between the games, ABHS honored its senior athletes who participated in winter sports. This included both boys and girls basketball, cheerleading and swimming. Each athlete was introduced along with his or her parents.

AB Students Compete In Math Olympics

Arkansas Baptist was well represented at Math Olympics, the annual ACSI state mathematics competition held at Conway Christian School. Participants had to test locally to determine eligibility before being accepted as competitors at the state level. Seventeen of our students
received ribbons for high scores in the areas tested.

The results for the Calculation Division are: 3rd graders Ruthie Fox and Anthony Tran tied for 3rd place; 4th graders Catalina Terlea, 2nd place; Lance Hockersmith, 5th place; 5th graders Kane Pruitt, 3rd place; Tanner Shipman, 4th place; 6th graders Briana Roden, 1st place with a medal; Jessica Garrett, 3rd place. The results for the Reasoning Division are: 3rd graders Daniel Cobb, 2nd place; Maisen White, 4th place; 4th graders David Dillon, 1st place with a medal; Owen Baker, 2nd place; 5th graders Austin Crook, 2nd place; Noah Sanders 4th place; 6th graders Matthew Cline, 1st place; Lauren Shepard 5th place; 7th grader Caleb Byrd, 5th place. Students who received medals were required to have been 1st place in their division while also scoring above a certain percentage. Good job, Eagles!

Lady Eagles Dominate Episcopal

Arkansas Baptist’s 4th ranked Varsity Boys suffered a rare loss at home while the Lady Eagles took a big win over Episcopal on Tuesday, January 31.

The Eagles led Episcopal 14 to 10 after one quarter but were outscored 33 to 18 over the 2nd and 3rd quarters. Their 4th quarter rally fell short. Episcopal won 65 to 58 dropping the Eagles records to 18-6 and 10-2 in the 5-3A conference. Dakota Newkirk led the Eagles with 13 points followed by Mitch Thompson with 11. Drake Newkirk added 10 and Ben Gipson had 9. Brandon Rook scored 6, Ryan Perkins scored 4, Alex Becker scored 3 and Josh Estes had 2 points to round out the Eagle scoring.

The Lady Eagles pushed their record to 12-9 and 8-4 with a 74 to 26 win over Episcopal. AB led 23 to 2 after the first period and never looked back. Caroline Hogue had 24 points to lead the Lady Eagles. Mari Bednar added 10, Katelyn Caldwell and Apple Filat each had 9, Hannah Estes and Kayla Byrd each had 8, Erin Jackson scored 5 and Blaze Mallory added 1 to complete the Lady Eagle scoring.

Students Excel at Annual Spelling Bee

AB was well represented at the ACSI State Spelling Bee. Arkansas Baptist students placed in each grade level represented. The results were as follows: 3^rd grader Daniel Cobb 2^nd place; 4^th grader Alex Watson, 2^nd place; 5^th grader Austin Crook, 1^st place; 6^th grader Jessica Garrett, 2^nd place. Fifth grader Austin Crook competed in the final Spell Down with 5^th – 8^th grade students. He is one of 4 students from this region who were selected to represent Arkansas in the Regional ACSI Spelling Bee in Dallas this spring.
