AB Celebrates The Class of 2012

Sunday, May 13, was a great day of celebration as the Class of 2012 had its Commencement ceremonies. A packed sanctuary at First Baptist Church of Little Rock watched as sixty-two seniors crossed the stage to acknowledge the completion of their educational career at ABHS.

The Class of 2012 received 3.4 million dollars in scholarship offers to colleges and universities across the country. This class was involved in numerous athletic, academic and missions’ achievements throughout their time at ABHS. This senior class honored the school by presenting Mr. Goldsmith a gift of $6,000 to be used in the purchase of wireless internet for the high school campus.

ABHS was proud to honor twenty-four students who had been at the school for either thirteen (k-5) or fourteen (k-4) consecutive years. The school also presented Will Whalen with a gift in honor of his future service to our country in the United States Army.

The Salutatorians for the Class of 2012 were Salina Adolph and Sam Flournoy. The Valedictorian for this very talented class was Thomas Hall. Ryan Perkins was also honored as the Christian Life and Leadership Award winner for 2012. Each of these students presented a charge to their classmates and all in attendance.

A beautiful reception followed the event. Families and friends were able to spend time celebrating with the graduates.

ABHS PTF, Class of 2012 Make Donation For Wireless Internet

Arkansas Baptist High School would like to thank the High School PTF and the Class of 2012 for their generous donations to make wireless internet available to all of our students next fall. The High School PTF recently presented the school with a check for $36,000. The PTF has also committed $5,000 per year for the next three years. The Senior Class of 2012 has left a gift of $6,000 that will also be a part of this important project.

The purchase and installation of this equipment will allow the school to implement a Bring Your Own Device Policy next year which will allow students to bring various portable devices to use in ABHS classrooms. This new technology will be a platform for future student to student and student to teacher educational collaboration. It will also allow the school to move forward with the implementation of the Google Apps for Education Program.

The monies that were provided by the High School PTF come in most part from parent use of Kroger Cards at your local grocery store. This program is providing funding for book discounts for parents and worthy projects of this type for the high school.

The school would like to thank this year’s PTF officers for their hard work and dedication in serving our school community. This year’s board members were Julie Long, Lisa Roberts, Cheryl Estes, Veronica Johnson, Holly Singleton, Vanessa Brickman, Jan Rooker and Patti Hickman.

Students Model Prom Dresses For Presbyterian Village Residents

Amber Smith, Emily McClary, Katelyn Hogue, Sarah Hill, Shannon Taylor, Grace Evans and Melissa Brown all recently participated in a fashion show at Presbyterian Village. Each of the girls wore their prom dresses for the event. They strolled the halls and visited individual rooms bringing smiles to many faces. Their sweet spirits and smiling faces helped lift the spirits of many of the residents.

Eagle Brigade Does It Again

For the second consecutive year, the Arkansas Baptist Band has been awarded the prestigious ASBOA Sweepstakes Trophy. This trophy is the highest award a band can receive in the state of Arkansas. The award is given to any band who earns a first division rating at the ASBOA Region Marching Assessment, ASBOA Region Concert Assessment and ASBOA Region Sight Reading competitions. Bands must earn the first division rating in ALL events. The Arkansas Baptist Eagle Brigade was one of only four high school bands in the state, within our classification, to earn the award this year.

Ryan Perkins Earns Christian Life and Leadership Award

Each year, AB honors one senior student with the Christian Life and Leadership Award. This student will give a charge to the seniors at the Baccalaureate service. This award, considered to be one of the highest given by the school, is presented to a student from the senior class who is recognized by teachers and fellow students as someone who displays Christian values, Christ-like characteristics and leadership qualities on a consistent basis. Senior Ryan Perkins was chosen as student who best exemplified the definition of this award.

AB Names Delegates to Girls State, Boys State

Each year, AB chooses two junior girls and two junior boys who have demonstrated leadership, character, scholarship, cooperativeness and community service to represent the school as delegates to Girls State and Boys State. These students spend a week learning about government and improving their leadership skills. This year the following students were selected to represent our school: Morgan Baldwin, Katherine Caid, Connor Erwin and Nathan Rogers.

Salina Adolph Named National Merit Semi Finalist

Approximately 1.5 million juniors in 22,000 high school entered the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 PSAT, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. Senior Salina Adolph has achieved this prestigious honor.

AB Seniors Honored as Arkansas Times Academic All-Stars

Each year, the Arkansas Times recognizes high school seniors who not only have good grades and top-notch test scores but also have achieved extraordinary success both in and out of the classroom. Seniors Thomas Hall and Salina Adolph were given the honor of representing Arkansas Baptist as Arkansas Times Academic All-Stars. The two were among other seniors from the Little Rock area who were featured in a recent edition of Little Rock Family Magazine.

Jr High Track Team Competes in District Tournament

The Junior High Track Team recently competed in the District Tournament in Jessieville.

Congratulations to the Junior High Girls’ Track Team for bringing home the 5AAA Conference Runner-up Trophy. Only 9 girls competed at the conference meet. They fought through determination, sweat and some tears to bring this accomplishment home to AB. They competed against teams with four times their numbers. Great Job Ladies to all of your hard work!

Second Grade Students Create Dioramas

A highlight for any second-grader is reading. Our second graders have just fallen in love with it! It’s hard to tear them away from the library carpet or to get them to put the book they reading down at their desks. This year, students were given a Reading Comprehension project. Students were instructed to read a book, write a book report on it and make a diorama of a scene from the book. Immediately, students began trying to figure out how they would ever choose just one book.

Students decided on a variety of books. Some chose fiction books such as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory while others chose non-fiction books such as The True Story of Titanic. The assignment provided students an opportunity to not just enjoy reading a book but to go deeper with their comprehension of the story. After all their hard work, students enjoyed sharing their new discoveries with classmates as they presented their projects to their peers.
