AB Alum Captures Southern Amateur Championship

carpenter-0718jpg-86b246b06aff8468_largeAlex Carpenter fired a 6-under-par 30 on the back nine at Shoal Creek to come charging through the field and capture the 104th Southern Amateur Championship. Carpenter, who will be a sophomore at Abilene Christian University this fall, edged Patrick Cantlay by one shot and fellow overnight leader Blayne Barber by three.

The Little Rock, Ark., native shot rounds of 70-67-70-66 –272, 16-under-par. Cantlay, from Los Alamitos, Calif., and who will be a freshman at UCLA, shot 66-68-71-68–273. Carpenter entered the final round two shots back of Cantlay, Barber and University of Alabama rising junior Bud Cauley. He made the turn in 35, 1-under par after making three birdies and two bogeys, but he then caught fire coming home with birdies on Nos. 10, 11, 14 and 16 before draining a 65-foot eagle putt on No. 17 to take the lead for good.
