ABES Announces Spring Box Tops Contest

ABES will hold its semi-annual Box Tops for Education collection contest from February 14-24. The school is halfway to its goal of earning $4,000 by collecting Box Tops. Bonus Box Tops can also be earned using your Kroger Plus card. Students will be rewarded for submitting Box Tops. Click here to download a collection sheet.

Prizes for this contest include the following:

1. Each student turning in 2 complete “25 count” collection sheets (TOTAL of 50 Box Tops) *expired BT, Campbells labels, etc. do not count

PRIZE: Out of Dress Code Day

2. Each student turning in 3 complete “25 count” collection sheets (TOTAL of 75 Box Tops) *expired BT, Campbells labels, etc. do not count

PRIZE: Sweet Treat Day (+ Out of Dress Code Day for first two sheets)

3. Class turning in the most Box Tops overall

PRIZE: Box Tops Spirit Wand (filled with goodies) & Special Prize for Teacher

4. Student turning in the most Box Tops overall

PRIZE: Mini Box Tops Spirit Wand (filled with goodies)

5. One student from each grade level (K3 – 6) turning in the most Box Tops will have their name in a drawing to choose a prize from the Box Tops Treasure Box. Five names will be drawn.

When submitting Box Tops, please remember the following:

Collection sheets should only consist of the little 10 cent Box Tops. All Bonus Box Tops worth more than 10 cents, should be placed in a separate envelope or baggie. Bonus BT’s DO count for your child, we just have to submit them separately than the 10 cent collection sheets.
NO STAPLES – Please do not staple Box Tops to collection sheets. Use tape or glue only.
Be sure to list your Child’s name and their Teacher on each sheet, envelope, or baggie.
An AB collection sheet is attached. Additional collection sheets are available for printout by clicking here. Hard copies are also available in the Elementary Office.

AB Students Compete In Math Olympics

Arkansas Baptist was well represented at Math Olympics, the annual ACSI state mathematics competition held at Conway Christian School. Participants had to test locally to determine eligibility before being accepted as competitors at the state level. Seventeen of our students
received ribbons for high scores in the areas tested.

The results for the Calculation Division are: 3rd graders Ruthie Fox and Anthony Tran tied for 3rd place; 4th graders Catalina Terlea, 2nd place; Lance Hockersmith, 5th place; 5th graders Kane Pruitt, 3rd place; Tanner Shipman, 4th place; 6th graders Briana Roden, 1st place with a medal; Jessica Garrett, 3rd place. The results for the Reasoning Division are: 3rd graders Daniel Cobb, 2nd place; Maisen White, 4th place; 4th graders David Dillon, 1st place with a medal; Owen Baker, 2nd place; 5th graders Austin Crook, 2nd place; Noah Sanders 4th place; 6th graders Matthew Cline, 1st place; Lauren Shepard 5th place; 7th grader Caleb Byrd, 5th place. Students who received medals were required to have been 1st place in their division while also scoring above a certain percentage. Good job, Eagles!

Students Excel at Annual Spelling Bee

AB was well represented at the ACSI State Spelling Bee. Arkansas Baptist students placed in each grade level represented. The results were as follows: 3^rd grader Daniel Cobb 2^nd place; 4^th grader Alex Watson, 2^nd place; 5^th grader Austin Crook, 1^st place; 6^th grader Jessica Garrett, 2^nd place. Fifth grader Austin Crook competed in the final Spell Down with 5^th – 8^th grade students. He is one of 4 students from this region who were selected to represent Arkansas in the Regional ACSI Spelling Bee in Dallas this spring.

Seeing Is Not Believing

Dr. Jonathan Curtis presented a mesmerizing program to 2^nd though 6^th grade students on Thursday, January 26. The program was titled, “Seeing is Not Believing.” He adeptly intertwined the gospel message with stunning illusions, including some visuals made famous by Houdini. Students left with a clear picture of the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ.

K4 Learns About Bears

K4 students have spent the last two weeks learning about bears. Mrs. Norman’s class made headbands and wore them around the school as part of their focus on bears. During their study, students learned about different types of bears, what bears eat and where they live. K4 ended their study on bears this week with a bear party. Each student brought their favorite bear to school and enjoyed special bear snacks, made a bear craft and shared their beary special friends.

3rd Graders Introduced To The Orchestra

The 3rd grade students instantly “played” the instruments most commonly found in a symphony orchestra during the annual visit from the Orchestra Guild. Members of the Guild volunteer their time to provide a free program for schools in central Arkansas so students can learn about the orchestra. A member of the Arkansas Symphony also participates by demonstrating his/her instrument to the students.

Our students were able to listen to Meredith Hicks on the violin as she played beautiful music. Students learned details about the violin’s versatility, such as the range of notes, the sounds that can be imitated and the history of her violin which was constructed in Italy in the 1700′s. Students were able to ask Ms. Hicks questions such as how old she was when she began playing the violin and how long she had played for the Arkansas Symphony.

Lauren Dillon conducted the orchestra after the four families of instruments were introduced. This allowed the instruments to cooperate and sound great together.

Opportunities to take your students to the Arkansas Symphony performances are available throughout the year. A purchased ticket allows a child to attend for FREE on Sunday performances.

AB Families Help Provide Christmas For Local Veterans

AB families joined efforts with local businesses to help provide special gifts for the 150 veterans who are currently patients at Fort Roots Veterans Hospital. Under the direction of AB alumni parent and Athletic Booster Club member Jacki Bruning, items for special gift bags and Christmas stockings were donated.

The gift bags contained sweats or pajamas, 3 pairs of socks, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, box chocolate covered cherries, candy, 5 different snacks, lap blankets, 3 thank you letters, scarf, t-shirt and ball cap. The gift bags were delivered to a total of 125 patients on 3 wards in the hospital.

The Christmas stockings contained 2 pairs of socks, razors, toothbrushes, toothpaste, box chocolate covered cherries, candy, 3 different snacks, lap blankets, 3 thank you notes, t-shirt and ball caps. The stockings were given to a total of 130 patients on 4 additional wards in the hospital.

The goal is to continue the effort by working with Fort Roots to provide special gifts for the patients for holidays throughout the year. The next project with focus on special Valentine’s goodies.

Sixth Graders Continue Thanksgiving Tradition

For more than twenty years, students in Mrs. Judy Cobb’s 6th grade classes have been making pumpkin pies to take to the Union Rescue Mission to be used for the Thanksgiving dinner they provide to hundreds of homeless Arkansans. This year was no exception. Students collected the ingredients and spent a morning working together to make the pies just before the Thanksgiving Holiday. A big thank you to Mike Grober who delivered the pies to the Union Rescue Mission.

Second Graders Give To Others This Christmas

The second grade classes helped provide Christmas for area families through the LRFBC Christmas Toy Store. The project targeted families in local elementary schools who needed help providing Christmas for their children. Students in Miss Butkowski’s and Mrs. Martin’s classes were asked to bring a new, unwrapped toy for an 8 year old boy or girl. The children responded by bringing a total of 33 gifts. The toys were added to others donated by LRFBC families and friends. On the morning of the Christmas Toy Store event, parents arrived at the church to select toys for their children. They also enjoyed a presentation of the Gospel by LRFBC staff. As a result of the donations by AB and LRFBC families approximately 200 Little Rock children will receive new toys for Christmas.

K3 – 3rd Grades Present Christmas Musicals

“The Christmas Story” (Through the Eyes of the Friendly Beasts) was the musical presented recently by the students in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade music classes, directed by Mrs. Janet Wentz. The narration wove the true story of Jesus’ birth from the book of Luke with classic Christmas carols such as “Away in a Manger,” Silent Night,” “Joy to the World” and others as well as songs such as “The Friendly Beasts” and “O Come, Little Children.” The children were dressed as someone living in that time period may have dressed, or as an animal that may have been in the stable.

Also presenting a program, entitled, “Happy Birthday, Jesus,” were the students in the K3, K4 and K5 music classes. Fingerplays, poems and songs about Christmas were performed by the students who were dressed in Christmas attire. Several of the students were dressed as Bible characters as they represented the time of Jesus’ birth.

The focus of the programs was the celebration of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ…the “reason for the season” of Christmas. Merry Christmas!
